THE STONE OF DESTINY (Book Review)

                                                         The Stone of Destiny

The Stone of Destiny by Andrew Neil MacLeod is a very entertaining novel! The story is an amalgam of Sherlock Holmes, Harry Potter, the Da Vinci Code, and American Treasure married to Alice in Wonderland (without Alice!).

Samuel Johnson and James Boswell are a sort of Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson on a Harry Potter adventure all over Scotland in ye olde Hammer Film adaptation complete with battles with Werewolves, warlocks and witches and the likes.

I was reminded of Walter Scott’s Rob Roy book. Not for similarities of writing styles, but in book title misnomers. Like the elusive Rob Roy of Sir Walter’s pen, there wasn’t exactly that much scribbling on the Stone of Destiny. Yes, Rob Roy and the Stone are key features in both books respectively, but I purchased The Stone of Destiny thinking that there would have been a bit more of the Stone in it. Anyway, I enjoyed what I read.

It contains some beautiful prose: “The moon hung low in the bay, its silvery edges softened by diaphanous wisps of cloud, reflecting its broken image on the wine-dark water.” p. 305.

Aye, a ripping yarn if there ever was one! It’s steeped in Scottish folklore (and porridge) during the 18th century.
