CHRIST'S GOVERNMENT

 Swords beaten into ploughshares, spears into pruning hooks the nations study war no more. In their preappointed times and within the boundaries of their dwellings the nations are many yet one under the doting eye of the Triune God – the original One and Many. In solemn league and covenant with each other and God, the Bible (applied to their diverse situations), is their constitution and unity. God’s law is their delight, meditated on day and night. On each nation’s flag the words, ‘Love God and your neighbour as yourself.’ Says Jehovah, ‘Now it shall come to pass in the latter days that the mountain of the LORD’s house shall be established on the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow to it.’ Isaiah 2:2. As was the red cord of Rahab, so their nation’s flag will be draped from a window of their own homes. Each person under their own fig tree meditates on things noble, just, pure, lovely, and virtuous – praiseworthy things, things of good report. Each season their vineyards and fruit trees give forth in abundance.

While receiving his sight a blind man once said, ‘I see men like trees, walking.’ The LORD says, ‘For as the days of a tree, so shall be the days of my people, and My elect shall long enjoy the work of their hands.’ Isaiah 65:22b. Like trees planted by rivers of waters, each brings forth fruit in its season. And written on each renewed heart is the Law of Love, the Ten Commandments. Age-wrinkles all but ironed out, the centenarian dies a young man! And, ‘the nursing child shall play by the cobra’s hole, and the weaned child shall put his hand in the viper’s den. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all My holy mountain, for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea.’ Isaiah 11:8-9.

Christ’s government began as a seed, the Seed of the Woman. The LORD said to the serpent Satan, ‘And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel.’ Genesis 3:15. As the woman Jael swung the workman’s hammer to pound a tent peg into the ground through Sisera’s head, as ‘a certain woman dropped an upper millstone on Abimelech’s head and crushed his skull,’ so the Woman’s Seed crushed the serpent’s head by the nails of His cross and the stone that rolled away.

Jehovah-Jesus says of Himself, ‘And whoever falls on this stone will be broken; but on whomever it falls, it will grind him to powder.’ Matthew 21:44. Christ is the Rock from which streams of living water flow. His kingdom is the stone that was cut out without hands crushing the image of all that exalts itself against the knowledge of God. ‘The stone that struck the image became a great mountain and filled the whole earth.’ Daniel 2:35b. Like the covering cherub cast out of Eden – the mountain of God – so will be all who oppose the spread of Christ’s Gospel kingdom. ‘For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called, Wonderful, Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end, upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, to order it and establish it with judgment and justice from that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.’ Isaiah 9:6-7. ‘Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel, which is translated, “God with us.”’ Matthew 1:23. At the birth of the Prince of Peace the angels said, ‘Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men!’ Luke 2:14. The thief on the cross said to Jesus, ‘Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.’ Luke 23:42.

After His resurrection and coming into His kingdom Jehovah-Jesus met with His trained disciples on an appointed mountain, saying to them, ‘All authority has been given to Me in heaven and earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.’ Matthew 28:18-20. Daniel takes up the story, ‘I was watching in the night visions, and behold, One like the Son of Man, coming with the clouds of heaven! He came to the Ancient of Days, and they brought Him near before Him. Then to Him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages, should serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and His kingdom the one which shall not be destroyed.’ Daniel 7:13-14.
