Introduction (From my wee eBook - Why I am Not an Atheist
Is Atheism the absence of belief in God? Or is Atheism the belief in the absence of God? The Atheist would answer to the former. However, it needs to be noted that it is not merely the absence of belief per se that defines Atheism. Rather it is the absence of belief in God that describes Atheism. The Atheist is “a-theist”, i.e., Godless.
Here is the rub: The use of the word “theist” in its description means that not only is Atheism the absence of belief in God. It is also the belief in the absence of God! For example, to say that I disbelieve in global warming does not simply mean that belief in global warming is absent from me. It means that I believe in the absence of global warming because the belief is absent from me! Therefore Atheism is the belief in the absence of God.
Summary: Atheism believes that God does not exist.
